• Elvia Politi (E.P.) -- A very timely and urgent topic, propaganda is a phenomenon that everyone understands but is difficult to codify. Larry, can you explain to us what propaganda is and what its purpose is?

 

LARRY ROMANOFF (L.R.) -- A simple definition of propaganda is that it is the dissemination of information used to influence public opinion to adopt a certain point of view or to promote a particular political cause. It is generally a method of population control by those who have political or financial power. Propaganda is almost always associated with information of a biased or misleading nature, consisting of a mixture of facts, half-truths, and outright lies. Propaganda is not only psychological manipulation but actually "psychiatric" manipulation, directed to affecting the emotions of people and through this to control their thinking and behavior. It employs behavioral theory extracted mostly from the teachings of Sigmund Freud and, in its worst form, it is always insidiously manipulative, using the deepest fears or longings of people to create acceptance of a particular point of view, to become emotionally charged about that point of view, and to lead to action of some kind.

 

The two primary uses of propaganda have been to inflame a nation's public to support a war, and to engineer and promote social changes.

• Elvia Politi (E.P.) -- Tema attualissimo e urgente, la propaganda è un fenomeno che tutti comprendono ma che difficilmente si riesce a codificare. Larry, ci puoi spiegare che cosa è la propaganda e quale è il suo scopo?

Larry Romanoff (L.R.) -- Per dare un semplice definizione della propaganda, possiamo dire che è la diffusione di informazioni utilizzate per influenzare l’opinione pubblica affinché adotti un determinato punto di vista o per promuovere una specifica causa politica. In genere, è un metodo di controllo della popolazione da parte di coloro che hanno potere politico o finanziario. La propaganda è quasi sempre associata a informazioni di natura faziosa o fuorviante, costituite da un mix di fatti, mezze verità e totali bugie. La propaganda non è solo una manipolazione psicologica ma una vera manipolazione “psichiatrica”, con lo scopo di influenzare le emozioni delle persone e, attraverso questo, controllare il loro pensiero e il loro comportamento. La propaganda utilizza la teoria comportamentale derivata principalmente dagli insegnamenti di Sigmund Freud e, nella sua forma peggiore, è sempre insidiosamente manipolativa: sfrutta le paure o i desideri più profondi delle persone al fine di creare l’accettazione di uno specifico punto di vista, per renderle emotivamente cariche rispetto a quel punto di vista e per portarle ad agire in un determinato modo.

LARRY ROMANOFF (L.R.) - Prosta definicja propagandy mówi, że jest to rozpowszechnianie informacji wykorzystywanych do wpływania na opinię publiczną w celu przyjęcia określonego punktu widzenia lub promowania określonej sprawy politycznej. Jest to generalnie metoda kontroli populacji przez tych, którzy mają władzę polityczną lub finansową. Propaganda jest prawie zawsze związana z informacjami o tendencyjnym lub wprowadzającym w błąd charakterze, składającymi się z mieszanki faktów, półprawd i jawnych kłamstw. From their experiences in the formulation, manipulation and control of public perception and opinion with the CPI, both Lippman and Bernays later wrote of their open contempt for a "malleable and hopelessly ill-informed public" in America. (1) Lippmann had already written that the people in a democracy were simply "a bewildered herd" of "ignorant and meddlesome outsiders" (2) who should be maintained only as "interested spectators", to be controlled by the elite "secret government". They concluded that in a multi-party electoral system (a democracy), public opinion had to be "created by an organized intelligence" and "engineered by an invisible government", with the people relegated to the status of uninformed observers, a situation that has existed without interruption in the US for the past 95 years. Bernays believed that only a few possessed the necessary insight into the Big Picture to be entrusted with this sacred task, and considered himself as one member of this select few.

 

"Throughout his career, Bernays was utterly cynical in his manipulation of the masses. In complete disregard of the personal importance of their sincerely held values, aspirations, emotions, and beliefs, he saw them as having no significance beyond their use as tools in the furtherance of whatever were the commercial and political ends of his hirers."

Many years ago, the Jewish-American political commentator Walter Lippmann realised that political ideology could be completely fabricated, using the media to control both presentation and conceptualisation, not only to create deeply-ingrained false beliefs in a population, but also to entirely erase undesirable political ideas from the public mind. This was the beginning of not only the American hysteria for freedom, democracy and patriotism, but of all manufactured political opinion, a process that has been operative ever since. Lippmann created these theories of mass persuasion of the public, using totally fabricated "facts" deeply insinuated into the minds of a gullible public, but there is much more to this story. An Austrian Jew named Edward Louis Bernays, who was the nephew of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, was one of Lippmann's most precocious students and it was he who put Lippmann's theories into practice. Bernays is widely known in America as the father of Public Relations, but he would be much more accurately described as the father of American war marketing as well as the father of mass manipulation of the public mind.
